Two shops, same lead time: which date will actually hold?

Ask each shop which spares for the machine that will run your part are on their shelf, which are a week away, and which are a month. That answer decides the date, and the badge on the machine does not. Two shops can be running the same vertical machining centre and be three weeks apart on the day a spindle drive fails.

It is a fair question to put to a supplier, and an easy one for a good one to answer. It is also getting easier to answer well in some places than others, because where a machine is built is starting to move.

Why the answer is changing

DN Solutions — the company that was Doosan Machine Tools — opened a plant in Bengaluru on 26 August, its first new factory anywhere since Yantai in 2003. It is a ₹600 crore investment, about $62 million, on a 25-acre site with a 100,000-square-metre building. It builds SVM vertical machining centres and LYNX and LEO turning centres, and the company says it is already at roughly 80% local content by parts count, aiming to source most remaining components in India within five years, spindle assemblies excepted.

The part a machine owner feels is not the assembly line. It is that the site also carries a parts warehouse, a repair shop and a training academy. Large-part machining, key machined components and shaft-related parts are already made in the same country as the machines that use them, in the company's own words. The spindle assembly still comes from outside India, so this is not a complete answer — but for what it covers, a three-week air-freight-and-customs wait for a part becomes a van.

That matters more than it sounds because of which machine it is. On IMTMA's figures for the year to March 2026, imports were ₹21,628 crore of India's ₹36,419 crore machine-tool consumption, and vertical machining centres were 12% of the import bill — the second most-imported machine type in the country. The machine most likely to be cutting your part is the one moving from the import column to the domestic one.

Four questions, and what a good answer sounds like

Put these to every shop quoting you, and compare the answers rather than the dates.

  1. Which machine runs this part? Make, model and where it was built. A shop that will not say is telling you it does not know which machine will be free.
  2. Where do the spares sit? Spindle, drives, controller, tool changer. You are listening for "in the city", "with the agent, a week", "ex-works, a month" — a real answer has all three categories in it.
  3. Who does the repair, and how far away are they? A service engineer trained by the builder, in the same city, is a different lead time from a contractor who has to source a part first.
  4. What happens if that machine is down mid-order? A second machine in the shop, a named subcontractor, or nothing. "Nothing" is an honest answer and a useful one.

A supplier who can answer all four is quoting you a date they control. A supplier who cannot is quoting you a date the freight forwarder controls, which is a different product at the same price. That is worth more than a few points on the per-piece number, because a buyer forgets a small price difference long before they forget a line that stopped.
