Japan crude imports August 2026: 31.6% American, 62.6% Gulf, 53% more per kilolitre, and why PSO's Rs 424.92 diesel is the floor for your generator hour
Rs 424.92 a litre. That is PSO's Hi-Cetane diesel from this morning, up Rs 9.09 on Wednesday's price and Rs 46.87 on 7 September. If the generator line on your quote still says Rs 398, the number the 11 September cost sheet was built on, you are pricing a barrel that no longer exists.
I can show you why it is not coming back. Not an oil desk's opinion. A customs office counting kilolitres.
Where Japan's barrel came from in August
Japan's Ministry of Finance published its August trade table on 16 September. Japan ran its refineries on Gulf crude, 94 per cent of it last August, so its table is the nearest thing we have to a count of what a Karachi refiner is bidding against. In August Japan landed 11,594 thousand kilolitres of crude, 3.6 per cent more than a year earlier. The volume barely moved. The origin did.
| Origin | Aug 2026, thousand kl | Share | Aug 2025, thousand kl | Share | Volume, y/y |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Middle East | 7,255 | 62.6% | 10,499 | 93.8% | −30.9% |
| United States | 3,659 | 31.6% | 520 | 4.6% | +603.5% |
| World | 11,594 | 100% | 11,191 | 100% | +3.6% |
The 2025 volumes and the shares are my arithmetic on MOF's quantity and percentage columns; the table prints the 2026 figures and the year-on-year changes. Kuwait's shipments to Japan fell 82.4 per cent in yen and Qatar's 86.0 per cent. Middle East LNG fell 82.8 per cent by tonnage. Same amount of oil. Different ocean.
Now the bill. Japan paid ¥1,190.5 billion for that crude, 58.7 per cent more than last August, for 3.6 per cent more oil. Divide one by the other and the barrel cost 53 per cent more per kilolitre. The American barrel was dearer still: its value rose 1,026.6 per cent on a volume rise of 603.5 per cent, about 60 per cent more per kilolitre than the same barrel a year ago, and it has a longer voyage and a bigger freight bill behind it. Kpler's Matt Smith told CNBC on Thursday that only three commercial vessels went through Hormuz on Wednesday against a ten-day average of seventeen, and that Saudi crude is now being loaded inside the Gulf because the East–West pipeline to Yanbu "remains damaged". Brent gave back 3 per cent on that news, to $102.72. The pump price here went up.
What it does to the hour
The machine that feels this first is the one on the pad outside. The tools site worked out the TOTAL TP250001's burn on 11 September from the 186FA engine's 273.5 grams per kilowatt-hour: about 1.7 litres an hour at its 4.5 kW rating, 1.2 at the 70 per cent load a set actually runs at, 0.9 at half. Same set, three prices.
| Load | Diesel, est. | 7 Sept, Rs 378.05 | 12 Sept, Rs 403.32 | 18 Sept, Rs 424.92 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100% of rated 4.5 kW | ≈1.7 L/h | Rs 643 | Rs 686 | Rs 722 |
| 70% | ≈1.2 L/h | Rs 454 | Rs 484 | Rs 510 |
| 50% | ≈0.9 L/h | Rs 340 | Rs 363 | Rs 382 |
Six hours a day at 70 per cent is Rs 3,060, Rs 156 a day more than a week ago and Rs 4,000 more across a 26-day month, for the same lights and the same compressor. On a job with forty generator hours in it, the fuel line moved Rs 1,000 between the day you quoted and the day you cut metal.
So put Rs 425 on the quote, not Rs 398. Log the hours per job. Write the fuel clause the 11 September post told you to write, indexed to the notified price on the date of dispatch, so the customer can check it in the newspaper and you are not eating a Rs 9 rise every second day.
The same Japanese table has a second line, for anyone waiting on a machine rather than a tank: metalworking-machinery exports up 26.8 per cent, 80 per cent more of it to the United States. The workshop site has that piece today.
My call, and it is mine, not PSO's or Kpler's: diesel does not print below Rs 400 on any PSO notification before 31 December 2026. The reason is in the first table. The barrel that replaced the Gulf one costs half as much again per kilolitre and comes from further away; the ships that would bring the Gulf one back numbered three on Wednesday; and a refinery does not swap its crude slate back inside a quarter. Brent can fall ten dollars and the diesel in your tank will still be an American barrel that sailed in August. If PSO notifies Rs 399 in November, I was wrong, and the Rs 425 on your quote cost you nothing but a rounding.
